Meet Iris Ramirez

April 17, 2017

Hi, my name is Iris Ramirez…lover of all things Jesus, wife of 10 years to Manny Ramirez, mother of three beautiful blessings (Xaigtlean-9, Jomari-5 & Cade-1) and servant of Christ through our faith & fitness organization, Foundations 6:19, LLC.

I can literally say I grew up in church, remembering weeks of revival and sleeping underneath the pews. I grew up in a Pentecostal church, so we always had church! My parents became the Pastors of our church while I was in middle school. I knew all the “do’s and dont’s” of being a Christian, but it was just a routine.

I didn’t have a real relationship with Christ until I went off to college. I had earned a full academic scholarship to Iowa State University, which was over 2,000 miles away from my little hometown of Earth, TX! Having to make decisions on my own and being responsible for them made me realize how lost I was without God’s direction. It was in college through a student led ministry called Salt Company that God revealed Himself to me and taught me what it meant to know Him and trust Him. And it became my passion to connect others to God so they too could know and experience His love!

After 10 years in the NFL, we’ve experienced a lot of trials and triumphs! For my personal journey, the hardest were the first years, when I was still trying to figure out my own identity.

I had gone to college to become an athletic trainer and was getting my Masters when I met Manny. We got married a year and half later during his senior year of college and got pregnant shortly after our wedding. Then he got drafted the following spring by Detroit, and we moved to Michigan. So in less than a year, I had gone from being an independent young woman with a plan to a wife of an NFL player and stay-at-home mom. I was introduced to everyone as either “Manny’s wife” or “Xaigtlean’s mom.”

Fast forward 3 years we got released from Detroit and found out we were pregnant with baby #2, Jomari. We ended up sitting the rest of the season out (I say “we” because the NFL becomes as much our lives as it is theirs). God placed some amazing women in my life throughout these first years to help teach me that purpose doesn’t always mean having an official title or position. I learned God’s assignment for this season of my life was to be a wife, mom, and child of God, and that truly was more than enough!

After being released, however, I still felt a tug in my heart that I had more to offer others to connect them to God’s love, but I wasn’t sure what that was.

As I pursued God, I had begun a health journey to lose weight and feel good about myself. I read a book by Lysa TerKeurst titled Made to Crave that completely changed my perspective on being healthy and how to achieve lasting victory! I invited some friends to join me on my health journey through this Bible study combined with some workouts! I loved connecting people with God’s Truth that helped them transform their lives in a very practical and tangible way through their health!

One night as I was working out to Insanity, I knew God was telling me that I was to be a personal trainer to help people get healthy both physically and spiritually! I prayed about it and talked it over with Manny. I started leading small workout groups and simply sharing God’s Truth with them. Shortly after, God gave me 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 as a theme verse for our group: “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit? You are not your own. You were bought with a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.”

He then gave me “Foundations 6:19” as our group name, reminding us that our bodies are His–and we must take care of them 1-because His Spirit lives in us and 2-so that we can fulfill His purposes for our lives without hindrance. We became official in June of 2012 and met in our high school gym and my in-season homes encouraging, equipping and empowering others to connect their Faith and fitness to honor God with their bodies!

We opened up our faith and fitness gym in October of 2015. And through it all, God has led the way for me to walk in this calling! I’ve learned that it’s not about being physically skinny…it’s about being spiritually strong!

My all-time favorite Scripture is Psalm 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and meditations of my heart be pleasing to You, oh Lord my Rock and my Redeemer!”

This is my daily prayer, and it can only become my reality when I spend time in His presence and His Word, then follow through with obedience.
